In this excellent interview with killer artist Jamie Wieck, a quote which I could use to sum up my own life perfectly:

Perversely a lot of my drive is based on my interpretation of success. I would love to succeed - but I can't really decide what 'to succeed' is, as it tends to flip-flop from one thing to another - leaving me with a very frightening, but at the same time, strangely comforting notion that I will never be able to put my feet up because I won't know when I'd be happy enough to do so.

Authors, motivators and other proponents of the positive-thinking-success revolution all agree on at least one thing: that in order to 'succeed', one must set goals. But they fail to take into account that setting goals is impossible unless you know where you want to go. I can set simple goals (healthy diet, get in shape, watch your money) but those are less goals than everyday common sense. I can't see a big picture, and setting an arbitrary stake in the sand at some point in a speculative future leaves me with a strongly disempowering feeling of uncertainty.

I've always related well to the sentiment 'If you don't know where you're going, that's where you'll end up', which makes no sense, and in another way makes more sense than anything else. Wieck sums it up perfectly.
